Abstract

Study of the isothermal depolarization in irradiated poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) as a function of the time, field strength, and temperature showed evidence of the formation of stable electron-hole pairs in the polymer bulk. Comparison of the results of ac and de measurements for the polymer samples irradiated under various conditions (mechanical compression, exposurein air or vacuum) revealed a correlation between the polarization effects and the concentration of terminal and middle peroxide macroradicals formed in the PTFE samples irradiated in the presence of oxygen. A mechanism of the stable ion pair formation is proposed, according to which the capture of electron by a macroradical with the formation of a stable anion is followedby the capture of a counterion (hole) within the Coulomb interaction sphere.
