Abstract

Aim and methods: 96 patients with acutely clinically unclear calf pain were investigated by color duplex ultrasound and sonography of the leg. Results: Ultrasound investigations showed the following results: 24% of patients had thrombosis of the calf muscle veins, 15% had thrombosis of the deep calf veins. 13% had muscle rupture, 7% had superficial thrombophlebitis, 7% hod haemotoma, 5% had ruptured Baker's cysts, 5% hod intra-articular fluid inthe knee joint, 3% hod large Baker's cysts, 1% had tumor. 20% of patients showed a normal result of ultrasound investigations. Conclusion: Sonographyof the calf in addition to color doppler is very helpful in finding the cause of clinically unclear calf pain.
