Abstract

A trial using dewatered primary clarifier fibre from an integrated blenched kraft fine paper mill as herbicide substitute was conducted in a hybrid poplar plantation. The time mulch was applied to thr soil surface in two different thicknesses, 10 cm and 20 cm, on a recently harvested hybrid poplar plantation. The area was replanted with poplar cuttings in rile following spring. During the first year, 80 to 90% of the weed growth was suppressed by the application. There is no significant difference between the two applications with respect to weed control. The effectiveness of the weed suppressant diminished after two years when the material started to decompose as indicated by a significant reduction of organic carbon content. Organic nitrogen has increased noticeably during the first two years, lowering the C/N ratio to about 50 from an initial value of 200. By the end of the: fourth year, the mulch had decomposed and reduced to less than 25% of its initial thickness. Significant growth improvement in the mulch-applied plots was demonstrated, presumably due to better weed control and improved soil moisture.
