Abstract

Receiver sensitivity of 10 Gb/s optically amplified system is accurately estimated in this paper. Using a simple approach, the receiver sensitivity is defined as a function of waveform in which signal distortion and intersymbol interference (ISI) are taken into account. The deviation between theoretically calculation and experimentally measured results can be obtained within similar to 0.6 dB at BER = 10(-12). The optimum between optical amplifier and system characteristics is then investigated for transmission systemswith single line erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and cascaded EDFA's.
