Abstract

A polyester containing NBD moieties both in the main chain and the side chain (P-2) was prepared by the reaction of a polyester containing NBD moieties in the main chain and chloromethyl groups in the side chain (P-1) with potassium 3-phenyl-2,5-NBD-2-carboxylate. The photoirradiated P-2 film containing quadricyclane groups released about 290 J/g of the stored thermal energy on DSC measurement. A 30 mu m thick film of P-2 was exposed to the sun for 3 months. During the outdoor exposure, although the stored thermal energy in the exposed P-2 film gradually decreased, the T-g Of the P-2 film increased and the molecular weight decreased. This is attributed to the cross-linking of the polymer and degradation of the main chain during the outdoorexposure. It was also found that the P-2 film, which was top-coated with PVA, showed better weatherability than the P-2 film with no coatings.
