Abstract

An attempt had been made to study the effects of a crosslinked cationic starch matrix on slow release of carboxylic group-containing herbicides. The herbicides such as 2,4-D (2.4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) and 2,4,5-T (2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid) were individually encapsulated into a quaternary ammonium cornstarch matrix that was crosslinked in the encapsulating process by using formaldehyde, sodium metaphosphate and epichlorohydrin, respectively. As compared with native or crosslinked native cornstarch matrices, the release rates of the herbicides from the crosslinked cationic starchmatrix in water could be significantly reduced when the matrices had a similar swell-ability. It was found that the function of slow release for the negatively charged herbicides could be achieved only when the cationic starch matrix had been crosslinked in the encapsulating process and the swell-ability of the matrix was kept at a relatively low extent. In addition the effects of the modification extent of starch, crosslinking agents, and amounts of formaldehyde on the behavior of slow release were also investigated.
