Abstract

The objective of the present work was to check the germination of guaco seeds at three different temperature conditions (20 degrees C, 20-25 degrees C, 20-30 degrees C). Mikania glomerata inflorescences with mature seeds were collected in Morretes, PR. After drying, the material was cleaned by eliminating branches and the larger floral structures. The resulting material was strained and ventilated in a seed blower and stored in two different conditions: (i) in cold storage room, (ii) at room temperature, for three months. An initial germination test was carried out, with five replications, for use as a control. The germination test was performed in a germinator, under light, on paper, one hundred seeds per gerbox, with eight replications. Daily readings were taken, the test was finished after twenty-three days. The data on percentage of germination were transformed by the arcsin of the square root and analyzed by ANOVA factorial (a = storage; b = temperature):Fa (**); Fb (**); F axb (**); C.V. 31.00%. A reduction in the capacity forgermination was noticed in relation to the initial germination rate, however the loss in capacity was significantly smaller in the seeds stored in cold chamber (50%) than in those stored at room temperature (87%). There alsois significant influence of the temperature on the germination rate, with the temperature of 20-30 degrees C inhibiting germination. Despite the germination rates being low, which occurs mainly due to the fact that many achenes were empty, the propagation of guaco by seeds appears to be quite promising, especially if they are not stored for long periods of time.
