Abstract

Advancing age is usually accompanied by a decline in glomerular filtrationrate and an increased incidence of certain renal and electrolyte disorders. These include an increased susceptibility to acute renal failure, hypo- and hypernatremia, hyperkalemia, and hypertension. This report discusses anatomic and physiological observations related to the aged human kidney and explores the various theories and postulated mechanisms underlying these changes.
