Abstract

The Cartons St-Laurent mill in La Tuque, QC, manufactures 420 000 t/y of white-top and bleached linerboard as well as food-grade bleached board. All grades are made from 100% virgin bleached and unbleached kraft pulp that ismade mostly from softwood sawdust. The mill operates two bleach plants to supply the pulp to the board machines. An unusually high brightness loss has traditionally been observed an the bleached pulp from the last stage of bleaching to the board machines' headboxes. In an effort to reduce this phenomenon, hydrogen peroxide was added tothe pulp at the last washer of one of the two bleach plants. This solutionwas developed from work done at Paprican. The trial period with hydrogen peroxide added to the pulp helped show that, under alkaline pH, the brightness loss could be limited to 3 to 4% ISO, in comparison with the normal 6 to8% ISO normally observed. In order to address the upcoming environmental regulations on AOX, an ECF blenching trial was also done on the same bleach plant. A 40% reduction of the AOX concentration was achieved on the mill's final effluent. At the same time, the bleached pulp brightness went down byapproximately 1.5% ISO. The headbox pulp brightness was maintained by the use of an increased amount of wet-end pigment. The possibility of combiningECF bleaching to the addition of hydrogen peroxide is being investigated.
