Abstract

Neuropsychology, the original scientific branch, studying the relation between the brain damage and the individual's behaviour, entered the toxicology research parallel with the development of its clinical investigative methods, in the framework of toxicology, the new scientific branch "neurotoxicology" developed to an independent scientific branch with the strong position among the medical and biological sciences. In neurotoxicology, the neurobehavioral toxicology has already an important position. The problems of behaviour in the sense of studying the effect of toxic matters on hierarchic ordered cognitive functions and processes, personality, including the outer manifestations of behaviour, represent an important part of this scientific branch. In this sense, the studying of effects of heavy metals, especially lead, mercury, and manganese, becomes very interesting in the last time. Especially manganese is interesting because on one hand it is an essential element for the organism and on the other hand a higher dose of manganese in an organism has the neurotoxic effects. Especially psychology with its methods gains the priority opportunities tobe of use also in this direction of investigation because it disposes an arsenal of methods that are able to detect even very soft injures of nervoussystem (peripheral nervous system and central nervous system); with the possibility to repair the reversible changes in neuropsychological injuries. The complexity of mutual relations between the neurotoxic matters and an organism is not mediated only biologically, but also psychosocially, i.e. through the factors seeming to be secondary for the first sight, however significantly participating in the origin and the development of central nervous system disorders, with the most frequent manifestation in outer expressions of individual's behaviour. In this context of scientific approach to thetoxicology of life and work environment, psychology and behavioural problems have their important position.
