Abstract

A thin blood film is the cornerstone of emergency diagnosis of imported malaria, but is time consuming and difficult to read by inexperienced staff. The use of rapid coloration kits reduces the slide preparation time for microscope observation. Nevertheless, the sensitivity of the thin blood film is in the range of 150 parasites per mu L after 20 to 30 min of microscope observation. Using acridine orange reduces the response delay to a few minutes, but requires specific equipment and an experienced staff It is now possible to detect specific Plasmodium falciparum antigens (HPR2 or lactate dehydrogenase) with rapid and easy-to-perform immunochromatographic tests. Thesensitivity of these techniques is similar to that of prolonged thick blood film examination. However, these tests cannot be used alone since they donot permit the detection of other Plasmodium species (except for OptiMal(TM)). (C) 1999 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS.
