Abstract

A growth experiment and a balance study were carried out to examine the effects of supplementation of either a rye (R)- or a barley (B)- based broiler diet with either a xylanase (X)- or a beta-glucanase (beta)-based enzyme preparation on performance and nutrient digestibility. Xylanase addition tothe rye based diet improved performance and digestibility parameters to a greater degree than addition of beta-glucanase to the same diet type. Both xylanase and beta-glucanase addition to the barley based diet improved parameters only slightly when compared to the negative barley based control. Beta-glucanase supplementation tended to be more effective than xylanase addition. Birds fed barley based diets performed generally better than those fed the rye based diets. Differences in performance and digestibility betweendietary treatments were mainly explained by differences in intestinal viscosity. Viscosity of ileal digesta supernatant of 480.4, 308.8, 404.2, 10.24, 5.0, and 4.58 mPas in R, R-X, R-beta, B, B-X, B-beta, respectively, corresponded to respective feed to gain ratios of 2.507, 2.197, 2.641, 1.916, 1.903 and 1.879 gig and apparent fat digestibilities of 41.7, 68.8, 48.4, 76.0, 78.2 and 80.0 gf 100 g, respectively.
