Abstract

Rapid sequence intubation is the technique of choice to facilitate orotracheal intubation of many pediatric emergency patients. The technique is a specific protocol adapted to each individual clinical circumstance and designed to rapidly create ideal intubating conditions, attenuate pathophysiologic reflex responses to intubation, and reduce the risk for pulmonary aspiration Details of the technique are discussed with regard to the principles ofsafe practice. The fundamental importance of careful preparation and anticipation of potential problems are highlighted Medical evaluation, recognition of the difficult airway, patient selection, appropriate pharmacology options, and management of the failed intubation are emphasized to minimize adverse complications.
