Abstract

The H-2 desorption rates of the hydrides of the H storage alloys LaNi4.5Al0.5, LaNi4.5Mn0.5 and LaNi2.5Co2.5 were measured as a function of H concentration by a volumetric method in the range of temperatures from 298 to 348 K and of H-2 pressures between 0.01 and 0.6 MPa. The measured data showed that the desorption rates are controlled by the diffusion of H in the hydrides of the alloys. The obtained diffusion coefficient ranged from 3x10(-10) to 5x10(-9) cm(2) s(-1) for the alloy hydrides at these temperatures. The activation energy for H diffusion tended to increase with increasing H concentration in the hydrides of the alloys. However, the activation energy was found to decrease on partial substitution of Ni in LaNi5 with Al, Mn and Co. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
