Abstract

The purpose of our study is to evaluate the effect of different administration methods of progestogen on lipid profiles including total cholesterol, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, and triglycerides during hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in postmenopausal women. Seventy-one Korean postmenopausal women were assigned to three groups with different HRT methods, measuring their serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides before HRT and 12 months later. Using estrogen alone, or in combination with progestogen, cyclically or continuously, improves lipid profiles. Consequently medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) does not appear to deter estrogenic effects on lipid profiles.
