Abstract

Altitudinal and seasonal occurrences of carabid beetles on Mt. Kurobi, northern Kanto, central Japan were studied by baited pitfall capping. Individual abundance, the number of species and species diversity were found to decrease with increasing altitude. Canonical correspondence analysis and cluster analysis based on carabid species' compositions at all stations coincided with that of the vegetation. Distribution of ground beetles strongly depended on altitude and soil temperature by canonical correspondence analysis.
