Abstract

Coupling coefficients for polarization switching lasers are analyzed usingthe semiclassical theory. Two-made operations are considered in two-, three-, and four-level models fur optical transitions. It is shown that two-mode operations with orthogonal polarizations show weak coupling if saturationof absorption is neglected. Only if the saturation of absorption occurs, is the coupling strength between the two orthogonal modes strong. For comparison, two-mode operations with parallel polarizations are also analyzed, and it is shown that strong coupling occurs only when the frequency difference between the two-modes is small or absorption is saturated. In other cases, the coupling strengths between the two-modes with parallel polarizations are weak.
