Abstract

Low-density wood based beards constructed with wave-elements were developed, and their strength mechanisms, dimensional stabilities, and limits of low densities were investigated. More specifically, specimens made of elements of various shapes and sizes were tested in compression and 24-hours waterabsorption experiments. The results suggested the following. Low-density wood based boards, constructed with wave-elements, induced strength by means of the restraining of and the providing support for the other elements by way of the adhered connections between elements. It was inferred that the lower limit of low density boards constructed with wave-elements correspond to the wave-element's apparent density calculated on the basis of the volume of the cuboid which includes the wave-element. Concerning the shapes and sizes of the wave-elements, as far as the experimental conditions in this report are concerned, provided that the contact area among the elements is enough, boards constructed with short length elements indicated greater compressive modulus of elasticity than those constructed with long length elements. As for the dimensional stability of the boards, provided that the bonding force among the assembled elements are strong enough to be recognized as one composition, and the dimensional stability of wave-element boards was determined to be greatly stable regardless of the strength of the bonding force among the elements. The thickness swelling after soaking for 24 hours wasless than 6%. When the densities of the boards were near the lower limit, the boards' dimensional stabilities depended on the strength of the bondingforces among the elements.
