Abstract

To make the correct diagnosis and classification of hypoplastic and dilatating vascular diseases reliable data of the normal values of the diameter of the important arteries and veins are needed, Therefore we measured under strict conditions by colour duplex sonography such diameters in 33 men and 33 women, all healthy and divided in 3 age groups, From the arteries the systolic and diastolic diameters and the thickness of the >>intima-media-complex<< were evaluated. We did not find comparable systematic evaluations in the literature, As far as we found comparable data, they differed distinctly from one another and our own measurements did not at all lie in the middle range of these data, The vascular diameters of men were without exception greater than those of women. There was a highly significant correlation between the diameter ofthe common femoral artery and the age in men, of the superficial femoral artery and the body height in men, of the common carotid artery and the bodyweight in men, of the external iliac artery and the body weight in women, of the common carotid artery and the body mass index in men and of the external iliac artery and the body mass index in women. Furthermore there was ahighly significant correlation between the diameter of the common femoral vein and the body weight and the body mass index in women. The systolic-diastolic diameter changes of the supraaortic and the leg arteries were identical for men and women in the age group of 20-35 years. They were somewhat smaller for the leg arteries than for the supraaortic arteries and they became smaller with increasing age. The thickness of the >>intima-media-complex<< became larger, vith increasing age in men and women.
