Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the proportion of students that have had sexual relations, the situations under which they hadthem, to identify the use of contraceptive methods and to compare this data in study of different school level. Method: the sample design was a two-stage, stratified and by clusters. The sample was randomised (n=10,173 students from 7(th) to 12(th) grade in the school year of 1997-1998). An instrument with 10 items was used. Results: 18.4 % of the sample had sexual relations. The mean age of the first sexual relation was 14 years for men and 15 years for women. To get pregnant or to make pregnant someone without intending to do so was reported to be 1.2 %. Seventy seven percent of the subjects having had sexual relations used contraceptive methods; the most commonlyused were the condom (60.9) and the interrupted sexual intercourse (1.8 %); 20 % had sexual relations under the influence of alcohol. Discussion: Nowadays youths have an active sexual life at a younger age. It's important toprevent risk situations because a high percentage of students have had sexual relations under alcohol influence. Twenty two percent of the sample didn't use any contraceptive method and 0.8 % of the teenagers have been pregnant
