Abstract

Venous insufficiency is well known to be accompanied by blood flow disturbances. In previous studies, we have already pointed-out the presence of hemorheological abnormalities in this disease. The present study is devoted towards the evaluation of hemorheologic and hemodynamic changes induced by a provoked venous stasis in either normal subjects and patients with chronic venous insufficiency without varicose veins (CVI). The provoked venous stasis consisted of a compression by a cuff at 100 mmHg during 10 minutes. Then, using the same procedure, we havestudied the effects of Cycle 3 Fort versus placebo. The results show a significant red blood cell (RBC) hyperaggregation in patients. The main emphasis was however on the deleterious effect of venous stasis onRBC aggregation in patients. In regards to Cycle 3 Fort, it is shown to reduce the deleterious effects of the venous stasis after a 4-weekstreatment. By contrast, hemodynamic parameters remained unchanged. These hemorheologic improvements might be related to intrinsic factors of blood viscosity, seeing that we have no hemodynamic effect.
