Abstract

Whenever an issue of dialysis adequacy is considered by a nephrologist, the name of Dr. Frank Gotch immediately comes to mind. For more than 25 years, Dr. Gotch has influenced our approach to the rational closing of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. His many important contributions extend from the time that dialysis became, widely utilized to treat end-stage renal disease through the National Cooperative Dialysis Study. He has helped to shapethe way dialysis is pi escribed and delivered throughout the world. Presently he serves as an adviser in the HEMO study, the NIH-sponsored multicenter trial examining mortality and morbidity in the hemodialysis population. Ihave come to know Dr. Gotch through his invaluable work on the Intervention Subcommittee of this study. He helped to design the methods by which the dose of dialysis, a primary outcome measure of the trial, is quantitated. He also had a major impact on the membrane flux intervention, the other primary outcome measure. His contributions will allow us to maintain separationbetween the randomized groups and to arrive at valid conclusions at the completion of the study. I have learned much about the technical aspects of kinetic modeling from Dr. Gotch. More importantly, I have discovered his generosity with his time and willingness to help others understand his work. It is an honor to be associated with this physician whose name is inextricably linked with improving the quality of life experienced by our patients.
