Abstract

The importance of the breast goes far beyond its significance as a physical organ: it is regarded as a visible symbol of femininity and as a symbol of life and sexuality, and it contributes a great deal to a woman's female identity. A suspicion and then a confirmed diagnosis of breast carcinoma lead to deep of being threatened, and to loss of confidence and anxieties. Mastectomy does not mean a deep cut only literally and physically; it also cuts deep into the woman's personality and into the way she plans her life. General, but also individual and subjective, reactions may become manifest. Breastreconstruction with a method that is satisfactory for the woman's personal circumstances leads - also with individual variations - to a new beginning and to a change in lifestyle, supports anxiety-controlling strategies and shores up an essential part of the affected woman's quality of life. Fears of local relapse, of metastatic disease and of disease progression are obviously not eliminated by this means, remaining with her constantly, often for years. Nonetheless, from the psychological aspect too, there is a definite, albeit not uncritical, yes vote for breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
