Abstract

A comparison of two systems of milk somatic cell counting (SCC) currently used in the Czech Republic, ie. Fossomatic and Somacount, was endeavoured using a database of results of inter-laboratory trials of milk somatic cell counters. Both systems usually yielded lower values than the direct microscopic method (DMM) for samples with low SCC, but the difference was not significant. For samples with high SCC, Fossomatic yielded lower (P<0.01) values and Somacount non-significantly higher values than DMM. A comparison withreference values of corrected means showed that Fossomatic yielded lower (P<0.01) and Somacount higher (P<0.01) values. Repeatability of determination (precision) was markedly better (P<0.01) for Somacount than for Fossomatic for both, low and high SCC. While the negative biases of the two systems are equal, positive bias was lower (P<0.05), and hence accuracy higher, in Fossomatic. We conclude that it will be necessary to define specific sets of critical values for each SCC system in order to maintain an adequate sensitivity of individual parameters in inter-laboratory trials.
