Abstract

The structure of FeS-III has been solved from angle-dispersive x-ray powder-diffraction data collected at 7.5 GPa and room temperature. It has a monoclinic unit cell (space group P2(1) /a) containing 12 formula units. The loss of the magnetic order at the transition from phase II is accompanied by a sharp reduction in Fe-Fe distances to similar to 2.7 Angstrom. These short contacts form a 3d network of four-atom clusters and six-, eight-, and ten-member rings. [S0163-1829(99)01713-0].
