Abstract

Although the precise dimensions of intrauterine drug exposure are not known, the problem seems to be of major proportions. This article discusses theassessment of neonates born following intrauterine exposure to opiates, such as heroin and methadone, and cocaine, and other drugs capable of causingeither neonatal abstinence or neurotoxicity. Management strategies includeuse of techniques to optimize neurobehavioral integration and specific pharmacotherapy to clinically stabilize neonates who show moderate to severe symptomatology based on semiobjective, scientifically validated examination of those infants.
