Abstract

An all-solid-state continuous-wave wavelength-tunable Ti:sapphire laser was developed with a view to developing a source for spectroscopic measurement of various biophotonic information. As a high-performance pumping laser replacing an Ar ion laser, an LD-pumped intracavity-doubled high-power Nd:YAG laser was developed. A maxi mum continuous-wave green output of 6.3 W with a TEM00 mode, an optical-optical conversionefficiency of 32%, and an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 5%were obtained. With this laser, a Ti:sapphire laser was successfully pumped. The highest reported output of a single-longitudinal mode continuous-wave laser output of 1.4 W was successfully obtained at the oscillation wavelength of 800 nm. The efficiency defined as the Ti:sapphire laser output versus the electric power consumed in the LD is 1.1%, an improvement of 50 to 100 times the conventional Ar ion laser pumping. A single-longitudinal-mode operation for a tuning bandwidth of 150 nm was confirmed. The oscillation linewidth was 4.3 MHz at 800 nm. Theoptical outputs from the pumping green laser and Ti:sapphire laser exhibited a good low-noise characteristic of less than -130 dB/Hz.
