Abstract

The results of magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements are presented for these compounds which crystallize in a tetragonal structure deriving from the CuAl2-type. CeNi4Sn2 can be described as an antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice (T-N = 11.0(5)K) showing a metamagnetic transition whereas NdNi4Sn2 exhibits a more complex magnetic phase diagram since two magnetic transitions are detected near 13 and 10 K, respectively. T-N of CeNi4Sn2 is greater than that reported for other stannides existing in the Ce-Ni-Sn system: CeNi2Sn2 (T-N = 1.8 K), CeNiSn2 (T-N = 3.9 K) and Ce2Ni2Sn (T-N = 4.7 K). Moreover, this high T-N suggests that the magnetic properties of CeNi4Sn2 are not solely governed by the RKKY interactions.
