Abstract

The deceleration force caused by the polarization gradient cooling (PGC) is inversely proportional to the atomic velocity, and once the atomic kinetic energy becomes lower than the depth of the optical potential, the atom is trapped by the optical potential field at that point and the cooling procedure stops. We calculate the kinetic energy distribution after PGC is performed for a certain length of time with atoms with and without gravity. We also calculate the distribution of the harmonic potential energy when PGC is performed with trapped ions. In each case, the distribution is formed by a sharp-distribution component and a broad-distribution component.
