Abstract

The application of phosphorus precipitants directly in aerated tanks results in enhanced removal of organic impurities and improvement of activated sludge settling properties and it influences activated sludgemicroorganisms activity. The methods for evaluating the effects of ferrous, ferric and aluminium salts on heterotrophic microorganism activity have been studied in lab-scale bioreactors. Maximum specific substrate rate values related to volatile suspended solids or total organiccarbon content of activated sludge are recommended to quantify the influence of heavy metals on the activated sludge activity in the presence of precipitates.
