Abstract

In the course of maize breeding conducted by the Agricultural Management Co. in Debrecen, great attention is given not only to yield potential, but also to quality. The protein and amino acid compositions of two single cross hybrids (De SC 351 and De SC 377) and one triple crosshybrid (De TC 382), entered for state trials in 1994, and of their parental lines were reported last year (Novenytermeles 1997, 46, 1:23-35). The present paper reports on the protein, starch, fat, fibre and ash contents of these same hybrids and parental lines in 1996 and 1997, together with trends in the three most important amino acids. The results can be summarised as follows: The crude protein content showed a certain correlation with the weather and the size of the yield. In the case of higher yields the protein content declined, depending on the hybrid. The hybrid De SC 351 was the only one to achieve a protein content of over 11 % in both years. That of the other two hybrids and of the parental lines decreased in 1997 (Figure 1). The crude fat content varied from one hybrid or parental line to the other depending on the year and the yield, but no great differences were observed. The fat content was only substantially lower in the parental line De 8 in 1996 and in the hybrid De TC 382 in 1997 (Figure 2). The crude fibre contentwas much the same in hybrids De SC 351 and De TC 382 in both years. In 1997 the fibre content of hybrid De SC 377 and the parental lines De8 and De 10 was higher, while that of the De 8 x De 10 parental line was lower (Figure 3). No significant differences were observed in the ash content. Higher values were registered for the parental line De 8 in 1997, and for the maternal hybrid De 8 x De 10 and the hybrid De TC382 in 1996 (Figure 4). The starch content exhibited no substantial differences due to the year effect. Larger quantities were only observed in 1996 for the parental lines De 6 and De 8 (Figure 5). It was found that an increase in the thousand kernel mass was accompanied by rises in the starch and fat contents. The two-year data exhibited no substantial difference in the quantities of the three most important amino acids. Lysine was present in larger quantities in 1996 in both the parental lines and the hybrids, while methionine and cysteine had higher values in 1997 (Table 2). It could be concluded that, with suitable techniques, it is possible to develop parental lines and hybrids with protein contents only slightly influenced by environmental factors (e.g.hybrid De SC 351).
