Abstract

A new continuously tunable ultraviolet source with high peak and average power is presented and investigated in detail. Based on intracavity sum frequency mixing of a nanosecond optical parametric oscillator with the harmonic radiation of a Nd:YAG laser, UV radiation in the range of 230-330 nm was efficiently generated. UV energies of up to 20 mJ were achieved from a single Nd:YAG laser delivering 410 mJ of fundamental energy. This corresponds to an overall conversion efficiency of close to 5%, or similar to 10% in relation to the 532-nm second harmonic. The technique of intracavity mixing resulted in twice as much outputenergy compared to the conventional external conversion. This UV source is appropriate for various UV laser applications and particularly for the remote sensing of atmospheric constituents with lidar.
