Abstract

The structure and magnetic properties of the PrFe10.5+0.5xV1.5(1-x)Ti-x alloys with x = 0-1 and their nitrides have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermometric analysis (DTA) and magnetic measurement. The phase formation diagram of the PrFe10.5+0.5xV1.5(1-x)Ti-x alloys has been constructed as a function of Ti content x and homogenization temperature. It was found that PrFe11Ti compound with ThMn12 structure is only stable in a narrow temperature range 1303-1383 K, and that the ThMn12 structure phase will be synthesized at lower temperature and a wider temperature range by substitution of V for Ti, while the compound with ThMn12 structure does not form in the PrFe10.5V1.5 alloy. For PrFe10.5+0.5xV1.5(1-x)Ti-x alloys with x = 0.1-1 the Curie temperature T-c increases with decreasing Ti concentration. The PrFe10.5+0.5xV1.5(1-x)TixNdelta nitrides with x = 0.25-1 have a T-cof about 730-788 K, B-a larger than 8 T and sigma(s) of about 145 emu/g. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
