Abstract

Mechanical pulps tend to yellow upon long-term storage at ambient temperature and/or exposure to daylight. Sulphur-containing compounds andascorbic acid have been known to reduce the photoyellowing. In this paper we report that a treatment of pulp with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) can significantly improve the brightness stability ofbleached mechanical pulps during light-induced yellowing. Its underlying mechanism was proposed. The results also showed that, unlike otheradditives, such as ascorbic acid and mercaptoacetic acid the DTPA treatment suppresses not only the light-induced, but also the brightness reversion processes that occur during storage in the dark at ambient temperatures. Also, it appears that a DTPA treatment can permanently reduce the light-induced yellowing while other additives, such as reducing agents and UV screeners, are continuously being consumed during thephotoyellowing process, so that their ability to reduce the brightness reversion is only effective before being completely exhausted.
