Abstract

The polyaddition of 2,5-norbornadiene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid diglycidyl ester (NDGE) with terephthaloyl chloride gave a polyester (P-1) containing norbornadiene (NBD) residues in the main chain and chloromethylgroups in the side chain. The synthesis of self-sensitizing polymers by the chemical modification of pendant chloromethyl groups in P-1 wasexamined. When reactions of P-1 with potassium 4-benzoylphenoxide, potassium 4-nitrophenoxide, and potassium 4-nitro-1-naphthoxide were carried out using tetrabutylammonium bromide as a phase transfer catalystin NMP for 48 h, corresponding self-sensitizing polymers (P-2 similarto P-4) were obtained in good yields. The photochemical valence isomerization of NBD residues and the photosensitizing isomerization of theNBD residues due to the energy transfer from photosensitizers in the polymer were performed in the film state or tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. Although the rate of the photochemical isomerization of NBD residues in P-1 was greatly enhanced by the addition of a low molecular weight photosensitizer (1-methoxy-4-nitronaphthalene) in the him state, a similar result was not observed in THF solution. On the other hand, the photochemical isomerization of NBD residues in self-sensitizing polymers (P-2 similar to P-4) proceeded effectively compared with the mixture of P-1and a low molecular weight photosensitizer in the film state and in THF solution. The photoirradiated P-4 film containing QC moieties released about 84 kJ/mol of thermal energy, which is almost equivalent to that of photoirradiated P-1.
