Abstract

Error types of inhibitory dysfunction in free recall and word categorical fluency tasks were compared in patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and normal elderly. Results suggested that both groups presented inhibitory deficits, but with a different degree of impairment. Elderly adults seemed to have difficulty to suppress a no longer relevant information. entailing numerous repetitions, whereas AD patients seemed to have a disability to impede the entrance of irrelevant information into working memory, entailing numerous intrusions. In addition, results suggested that the presence of intrusions in the categorical fluency task was still more specific of AD than intrusions in the free recall task.
