Abstract

The development of the Paris-Edinburgh cell has extended the pressurerange for neutron diffraction by a full order of magnitude to 25 GPa and has permitted the first neutron structural studies of ices over anextended pressure range. High-pressure structural studies on ice, ammonia, methane, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia monohydrate have now beenperformed. The results reveal a wealth of new and unexpected phenomena, suggesting that the high-pressure structures of ices are much more complex than previously thought and establishing the importance of neutron diffraction in this held.
