Abstract

Tissues were collected from a variety of teleost species including the pomfret Stromateoides sinensis, Trichiurus haumela, Saurida tumbil, the grouper Epinephelus akaara, Sillago sihama, the yellow croaker Pseudosciaena crocea, the golden thread Nemipterus virgatus, Eleutheronema tetradactylus, Decapterus maruadsi, the grey mullet Mugil cephalus, the bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis and the dace Cirrhinus melitorella. Membranes were prepared from the various tissues, and tested for binding with radioiodinated bovine growth hormone and ovine prolactin. It was found that the liver membranes of S. sinensis, T. haumela, S. tumbil, E. akaara, S. sihama, P. crocea, E. tetradachylus and C. melitorella contained binding sites for I-125-bovine growth hormone. Growth hormone binding sites were detected in the gut, ovaries, gills and stomach of some species. Binding sites for I-125-ovine prolactin were present in liver membranes of S. sinensis, T. haumela, S. tumbil, P. crocea, N. virgatus and C. melitorella, and in ovary membranes of S. sihama. The binding of I-125-bovine growth hormone to dace liver membranes was inhibited by bovine and tilapia growth hormones but not by tilapiaprolactin.
