Abstract

The enthalpies of solution of the hydrated potassium and sodium berates K2B4O7 . 4H(2)O, KB5OB8 . 4H(2)O, and NaB5O8 . 5H(2)O in approximately 1 mol.dm(-3) aqueous hydrochloric acid, as well as the enthalpies of solution of H3BO3 in HCl(aq) and of KCl and NaCl in (hydrochloric acid + boric acid) (aq) were determined. Together with the standard molar enthalpies of formation of KCl(s), NaCl(s), H3BO3(s), and H2O(1), the standard molar enthalpies of formation of -(4568.77 +/- 3.24)kJ.mol(-1), -(4834.19 +/- 4.03)kJ.mol(-1), and -(5099.77 +/- 4.03)kJ.mol(-1)for K2B4O7 . 4H(2)O, KB5O8 . 4H(2)O, and NaB5O8 . 5H(2)O were obtained.
