Abstract

This article focuses on the development and function of the cellular immune system in the human fetus and neonate. Components of the immunesystem that are critical for the control of infections with viruses and other intracellular pathogens are emphasized, including T cells andtheir antigen-presenting cells, B cells and T cell-dependent antibodyproduction, and natural killer cells. B-cell antibody production in response to polysaccharide antigens, an important mechanism for the control of encapsulated bacteria, is not discussed but has been reviewed by others.
