Abstract

Industrial restructuring and regional household income growth, Reg. Studies 32, 103-111. In this study industry and place intersect in a systematic examination of the effects of industrial restructuring on men's and women's personal income and married-couple and female-headed household income. We analyse income trends from 1969-89 in relationship to shifts in employment in: manufacturing; finance, insurance and realestate; wholesale and retail trade; and services in 140 US metropolitan areas, grouped into sis types. Improvements in women's income appear to have offset men's losses in all sis area types, given increases in average median married-couple household income in each area type during the 20-year period. Our most provocative finding is the average decrease in median female-headed household income in the 19 classic deindustrializing centres while female-headed household income actually increased on average in the five other area types. This finding has implications for ongoing debates on welfare reform.
