Abstract

Transport of triplet excitations on polyguanylic acid (Poly(G)) at 77K has been studied by observing the efficiency of sensitization of Tb3+ ions, using both steady-state and time-dependent luminescence. Pastwork has revealed that energetic disorder within the polymer must be taken into account by using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for energy transport. A self-consistent fit of the experimental data can be achieved to yield the energy hopping rate, mean number of intrinsic traps perpolymer and the maximum number of Tb3+ ions in contact with Poly(G). We have applied this same experimental approach to the study of Poly(G) that has been exposed to gamma-irradiation. Irradiation diminishes the efficiency of Tb3+ sensitization and MC simulations to fit the datasuggest that the density of Poly(G) triplet states is modified and that the number of deep traps on Poly(G) is increased. This latter quantity correlates with the change of the molecular weight of the polymer,as determined by viscosity. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rightsreserved.
