Abstract

The symmetry properties of the photoinduced chi((2)) susceptibility in polymer films are controlled by use of the all-optical poling process. Ellipsometric adjustment of the write beams is introduced to monitor the macroscopic chi((2)) symmetry, from dipolar to octupolar symmetry features. Some representative experimental configurations are implemented on a dispersed-red one (DR1)-methyl-metacrylate (MMA) thin film,whereby experimental results are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the irreducible spherical decomposition of the coupled molecular beta hyperpolarizability and field tensors. We evidence in particular that a purely octupolar write configuration implies a polarization-independent second-harmonic generation response, which is not amenable to the classical electric field poling technique.
