Abstract

The purpose of this research is to provide a methodological finetuning of the duration of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA, the time separating the beginning of the presentation of the prime and the beginning ofthe presentation of the target) in the framework of the paradigm of nonsemantic priming. In this experiment, we rested the effect of familiar versus non familiar faces exposed suboptimally (50 ms) on the credibility judgments of statements without semantic ties to these faces. The effect of the variable was tested with three thresholds of SOA (150, 250, and 350 ms). In a 2 x 3 design, 90 subjects judged if the statements (of which the ''undecidability'' had been tested in a control group) were credible or not. These targets were preceded either by familiar faces (famous people) or unfamiliar faces (unknown individuals). The results indicated that the statements (from advertising messages) were judged more credible by subjects when they had been preceded by familiar primes rather than unfamiliar ones in the 250 msec SOA condition.
