Abstract

A poly PEGMA (polyethylene glycol methacrylate) was prepared by a solution polymerization method using a PEGMA which is one of the denatured PEGs. Though PEGMA is ester compound, metacrylic acid exists in PEGMA from self-hydrolysis. This methacrylic acid is introduced into main chain of poly PEGMA by copolymerization of PEGMA. This methacrylic acid is used for crosslinking with metallic ions. The effects of the prevention of the leaching of poly PEGMAs crosslinked with metallic ions were investigated. Al3+ ions have a greater ability to crosslink with poly PEGMA than with Ca2+ or Mg2+ ions. Then, insoluble polymers are formed by increases of molecular weights. The leaching of polymers from specimens crosslinked with Al3+ ions decreased more than did those with Ca2+ or Mg2+ ions. It was found that the crosslinkage with aluminum ions was a useful method to prevent the leaching of poly PEGMAs.
