Abstract

The ARIA (acetylcholine receptor inducing activity) polypeptide is a member of the neuregulin gene family. It was originally purified on the basis of its ability to induce skeletal muscle nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). ARIA mRNA is expressed in ventral horn motor neurons and brain cholinergic neurons. We report here that ARIA mRNA is heavily expressed in the embryonic, developing, and adult peripheral auditory and vestibular ganglia, the spiral ganglion and Scarpa's ganglion. Neither ganglion is cholinergic, but both express mRNAs for nicotinic and muscarinic receptors. The expression of ARIA in these gangliamay be related to the regulation of cholinergic receptors or a more general role for ARIA in growth and development. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
