Abstract

Local random matrix theory has provided a way for understanding the origin and nature of ergodicity and energy flow in molecules. We discuss here the predictions for vibrational mixing and energy flow in polyatomics. These predictions designed to be valid for the vast majority of states of the vibrational space compare well with results of large scale computation on specific molecules. We also address flow out of the special states often interrogated experimentally. These states near the edge of the state space show specific behavior not seen for the isoenergetic interior states. The quantum ergodicity transition predicted by local random matrix theory is analagous to the classical transition to global chaos. We also discuss matrix models that quantize classical flow in the limit of weak chaos, the so-called Arnold diffusion. Classically allowed Arnold flow in weakly coupled many-oscillator systems is severely limited quantum mechanically. The matrix model of Arnold diffusion can be also used to describe rotation-vibration coupling in molecules, such as ethanol.
