Abstract

A cDNA encoding an organic cation transporter (rbOCT1) was isolated from rabbit kidney. The cDNA encodes a 554 amino acid protein that is highly homologous to other mammalian organic cation transporters. rbOCT1 mediated H-3-1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (H-3-MPP+) transport in Xenopus laevis oocytes was saturable, sensitive to membrane potential, and inhibited by various organic cations. rbOCT1 mRNA transcripts are expressed in the kidney, liver, and intestine.
