Abstract

The World Watch Institute believes that environmental destruction, decrease of biodiversity, high energy and water consumption, in additionto the enormous demand for fodder cereals resulting in negative effects of modern animal production, are indicative symptoms of an ecological decline. In the future, therefore, animal breeding will have to be an integral part of a mole sustainable agricultural development. The sustainability of agricultural systems can be assessed using criteria such as diversity, quality of nutrient cycles, stability and capacity. The ecological reasons for a turn of events in livestock breeding carlbe derived from these. Specialised livestock breeding, concentrating a small number-of highly productive breeds, endangers livestock diversity. A system comprising maximum performance at ally price leads to high external input systems. It is becoming increasingly important how milk, meat and eggs have been produced and therefore new criteria of food quality, including their ecological and ethical value, are required. Longevity and fitness also have to be recognised as important breeding objectives. In this context, animal health has to be considered as much more than just the absence of disease. A reference to the necessary change of livestock breeding is included in the draft of the EU directives concerning organic animal husbandry.
