Abstract

Psychotherapy research has traditionally focused on isolated episodesof therapy despite the large number of individuals who use psychotherapy and other mental-health services more than once in their lifetimes. This article describes a qualitative study of 9 individuals who usedpsychotherapy and other mental-health services multiple times. Project participants provided detailed descriptions of each mental-health service episode and reflected on their overall treatment experience withthe help of a visual timeline. The timelines are presented and discussed in terms of the contextual information revealed in the interviews and a preliminary conceptualization of the functions of treatment episodes is used to characterize these treatment histories.
